Walking through history: inside the March of the Living

Each year, thousands of students and educators take part in memorial trips to Auschwitz as part of international Holocaust education programmes such as the “March of the Living”. This text is a critical reflection based on a personal experience of one of these trips, examining how remembrance, education, and lived practice intersect and where the structure of such programmes reveals its limitations.

The Holocaust and scripts in Europe: writing on the wall?

In today’s Europe hardly anyone gives a second thought to the letters people use to write, as they are almost invariably from the Latin alphabet. This is followed by the use of Cyrillic in Bulgaria and Ukraine, and the Greek alphabet in Cyprus and Greece. Yet, until the Holocaust, Hebrew was the continent’s third-largest script by number of users.

Auschwitz-Birkenau. Death at a wave of a finger

As the years pass, the last witnesses to the nightmare of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the death factory where more than a million Jews from all over Europe were exterminated, are passing away. The Bloody Treaty

August 23rd marks the anniversary of the infamous Non-Aggression Pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. While the document ultimately led to the start of the Second World War, the Kremlin continues to challenge this historical consensus. This corresponds with Moscow’s past attempts to obscure the memory of millions of Jews who suffered directly as a result of the agreement.
