A DEBATE ON THE PRACTICE OF REMEMBRANCE

The following speakers will be discussing the institutes of national remembrance, the problem of access to archives, the rehabilitation of political prisoners and the vetting and prosecution of the perpetrators of crime in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe during an international debate:
Dr Łukasz Kamiński Director of the Institute of National Remembrance, Poland,
Dr Dragoş Petrescu Chair of the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives, Romania,
Prof. János Simon Expert from the Institute for Research of History of Transition, Hungary,
Rüdiger Freiherr von Fritsch, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Poland.
The main purpose of the meeting is to share the experiences of people working in institutions dealing with reconciliation with the communist past and the political transformation in different countries of our region. The discussion will be led by Wojciech Przybylski, the editor-in-chief of Visegrad Insight.
The meeting is an introduction to the international conference GENEALOGIES OF MEMORY, to be held in Warsaw on 27-29 November 2013. Launched in 2011, the long-term project of the European Network of Remembrance and Solidarity will be carried out jointly with Collegium Civitas and the University of Warsaw. The programme aims in particular to promote issues related to the different ways of remembering the twentieth century in Central and Eastern Europe. The project website is a platform for connecting academics conducting research on remembrance in different regions of Europe. www.genealogies.enrs.eu
