Ukraine Updates: Escalation in the East
After the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation, concerns now grow over separatist movements and Russian influence in the Eastern parts of Ukraine. The weekend of April 12-13 2014 saw several cities in the east of Ukraine come under control of well-armed separatists. Acting president Oleksandr Turchynov announced that in response to the provocations, a “full-scale anti-terrorism operation” will be underway.
